Decluttering, Organizing, & Tidying Up: Understanding the Differences
Maintaining a clean, functional, and inviting home is a goal shared by many, but the path to achieving it can feel overwhelming. Often, terms like decluttering, organizing, and tidying up are used interchangeably, but each plays a unique role in creating a balanced and harmonious space. By understanding their distinct purposes and integrating them into your routine, you can build a home that not only supports your daily life but also enhances your well-being.
Decluttering: Clearing Out the Old
- Frequency: Every 3-4 weeks or as needed
- Purpose: Removing items that no longer serve a purpose
- Mindset: Letting go to create room for the new
Decluttering is the first step toward creating a functional home. It involves making decisions about what to keep and what to release, focusing on eliminating excess, outdated, or unused items. Decluttering doesn’t require a full-home overhaul; it’s about starting small, such as tackling a single drawer or a section of your wardrobe. Regular decluttering sessions prevent clutter from building up and keep your home feeling fresh.
Pro Tip: Schedule a monthly Declutter Day. Start with one small area and let the sense of accomplishment motivate you to continue.
Organizing: Creating Functional Systems
- Frequency: Once or twice a year. During the Winter and Spring wardrobe switch-out, I typically adjust my closet storage to suit the season. For Fall and Winter, I prioritize creating more folding space for bulky knits and sweaters. On the other hand, in Spring and Summer, I make room for lighter garments by increasing hanging space for flowing dresses, breezy pants, and other warm-weather essentials.
- Purpose: Setting up systems that make life easier
- Mindset: Finding sustainable solutions
Organizing is about setting up systems that support your lifestyle. It’s not a daily task but rather a project-based effort that helps you rethink and shape the flow of your space. Effective organization makes your home easier to navigate and maintain. It might involve reworking your pantry, installing a new storage solution, or reorganizing your closet. These systems reduce stress and make everyday tasks more efficient.
Pro Tip: Before you start, take inventory of your home. Identify problem areas and brainstorm solutions that suit your habits and preferences. For me, I needed to create more friction when it came to snacking, so I moved them to a pantry further away from the kitchen, making them less convenient to reach. At the same time, I relocated my pots, pans, and everyday cooking ingredients—like quinoa, beans, peas, and oats—were easily accessible. This shift has helped me in creating a healthier lifestyle by encouraging better habits and gradually transforming my behavior on what I eat.
Tidying Up: Maintaining Daily Order
- Frequency: Daily or as needed
- Purpose: Putting things back in their place
- Mindset: Daily maintenance to avoid overwhelming messes
Tidying up is the simplest and quickest of the three tasks. Unlike decluttering or organizing, tidying doesn’t require major decisions or effort—it’s about maintaining order. A quick 5–10-minute tidying session each day can make a world of difference. It’s easier to tidy up when organizing systems are already in place, as items will have designated spots, making daily upkeep feel effortless.
Pro Tip: Incorporate tidying into your daily routine by resetting your space before bed. It’s a small habit with a big impact. As a night owl who works from home, I find that early afternoons, around 3 PM, are the perfect time for a quick clean-up. It serves as a refreshing break from work. Evenings don’t work for me since that’s when I’m most productive and do my best creative work.
Bringing It All Together for a Balanced Home
Decluttering, organizing, and tidying up each serve a distinct purpose in maintaining a harmonious space. Decluttering clears the way for a fresh start, organizing builds systems that support your lifestyle, and tidying up ensures that your space stays functional and serene. Together, these practices create a home that feels good to live in with systems that are easy to maintain.
Enhancing Your Space with Feng Shui and Mindful Organizing
While these practices are essential for a harmonious home, they become even more powerful when combined with the principles of Feng Shui and mindful organizing. What Does a Feng Shui Consultant Do and Why You Should You Hire One
If you're new to the world of Feng Shui, you may wonder what exactly a Feng Shui consultant does and how our services can benefit your life. While interior designers focus on aesthetics and functionality, Feng Shui consultants take a more holistic approach, looking at how your space's energy flow, or chi, affects your well-being, relationships, and success.
Incorporating the practice of Feng Shui into your home or workplace can result in a more harmonious environment that supports your personal and professional goals. Here’s a detailed look at how Feng Shui works, what to expect from a consultation, and why hiring a Feng Shui consultant can be transformative for your space and your life.
Understanding Feng Shui: The Basics
Feng Shui, which translates to "wind" and "water," is an ancient Chinese practice that focuses on optimizing the energy (chi) in a space to promote balance, harmony, and prosperity. According to its principles, the arrangement of objects in your environment affects the flow of energy, and this energy can have a direct impact on various aspects of your life.
One of the core ideas in Feng Shui is that every space has its own energy field, and when properly aligned, this energy can enhance our well-being, success, and relationships. Conversely, if the energy is blocked or misaligned, it can contribute to feelings of stress, stagnation, or imbalance.
As a Feng Shui consultant I am trained to assess your space and suggest practical changes to help the energy flow more smoothly, bringing positive transformations to your life.
How Does a Feng Shui Consultation Work?
At Home & Heart Interiors, we offer the Feng Shui & Mindful Organize service where the first step in the process of any Feng Shui alignment of the space is decluttering & organizing. Through this process clients are able to not just declutter & organize but able to gain clarity on their decluttering tendencies and how to keep this under control for long-term success and also to understand their organizing tendencies that come naturally & is easy to maintain long after this service is delivered. After the mindful organize portion of this service we move onto the Feng Shui assessments & recommendations. We assess the floorplans & photos of the space that clients would have already submitted.
Key Areas of Focus During a Consultation:
1. Energy Flow: Our first step in this direction is conducting the virtual declutter & organizing sessions to give you tools to declutter & become organized for the long run. It is usually one of the easiest ways to keep your home Feng Shui-ed. Areas/ spaces prone to clutter are blocked areas where energy might be stagnating. We think about whether there are areas where energy flows too quickly, causing imbalance? Taking all of these into account will drastically improve the flow of energy in a space/ how the occupants will feel & experience the space.
2. Yin and Yang: Next I consider the balance of yin (soft, quiet, passive energy) and yang (bold, bright, active energy), in the space. Depending on the room’s purpose, you may need more of one energy type than the other. For example, bedrooms should emphasize yin for relaxation, while living rooms might require more yang for socialization and activity.
3. Next, I consider the balance of the five natural elements—wood, fire, earth, metal, and water, like. These elements are connected to different aspects of life, and they must be in harmony to create a balanced environment. For instance, if you’re seeking more growth in your career, adding wood elements example a plant, that is well taken care of and strategically placed in your space, might be recommended to symbolize growth and vitality. It is one thing to have plants in your home, but it is quite another to bring the plant into the space with the intention that this be a physical manifestation of your career growth & goals. This takes on new symbolism unlike any other plant that you brought into your home to “liven” up the space. i.e the latter is a feng shui adjustment but a more general one.
4. Generalized Cures/Adjustments. Feng Shui cures are simple, practical adjustments we suggest you make in your home or workspace to improve the flow of energy, or chi. These cures help balance any negative energy and enhance positive energy, which can improve areas of your life like health, relationships, and career success.
Think of Feng Shui cures as tools that help create a “feel-good”/ harmonious environment. When energy is balanced, it leads to a space that feels good, supports your goals, and promotes well-being. For example, lighting will affect how we experience a space. Bright Overhead task lighting in a bedroom is usually too jarring and will be less restful than applying warm ambient lighting to the same space. Rooms with too high of a ceiling can feel too wide open and lead to feelings of uneasiness because it makes us feel too vulnerable to the “elements” and therefore a Feng Shui adjustment here may include lower hanging pendant lighting to create a more covered and cavernous feel which promotes feeling of being protected and safe.
5. Bagua Map: As the name states, is a map showing where different energies are located within any space and how they correspond to aspects of life, such as career, health, family, wealth etc. Each area that falls within this map is aligned with specific elements, colors, and shapes that should be emphasized or balanced to bring positive energy. Therefore, this map is a very powerful tool we use to help clients align their desires(spiritual/metaphysical) with the physical/ in the real world. It helps us decide in our recommendations what item or decor is best suited for this specific location.
What Should You Prepare for a Feng Shui Consultation?
For your consultation have the following ready.
- Floor plan: This is essential for us to apply the bagua map and have a sense of the general layout of your space.
- Your goals: Think about what you'd like to improve in your life—whether it's better health, stronger relationships, or more career success. This is essential since many people seek out Feng Shui services to address specific concerns in their space and understand this is connected to their life.
- Photos: Taking clear, wide-angle photos standing from the corner of the room which will help us analyze things like color scheme, lighting and general ambience. These are all aspects of the space that we are not able to get from a floorplan to get a true picture (pun intended) of how the clients experiences the space.

How to Create Harmony in Open Concept Spaces with Feng Shui & Mindful Organization.
Open concept spaces have become a staple in modern home design, and for good reason. They offer a sense of spaciousness, fluidity, and connection that enhances everyday living. Whether you’re a family looking to create a more cohesive living environment, a host who enjoys seamless interaction with guests, or simply someone who enjoys the open, airy aesthetic, open concept spaces can significantly improve the functionality and enjoyment of your home.
However, while open concept living has its perks, it also presents unique challenges. Traditional interior design focuses on aesthetics and functionality, but it may not address the deeper energy flow and emotional connection to the space. Our Feng Shui & Mindful Organize service offers an integrated approach, combining intentional design with energy balance and mindful organization to create a harmonious and personalized environment.
Let’s explore how our service can transform your open concept space into a harmonious, functional, and beautifully organized environment.
The Benefits of Open Concept Spaces
Before diving into the challenges, let’s first acknowledge why open concept spaces have become so popular. One of the primary benefits is the way these spaces create a sense of openness and flow. By removing walls and doors, open concept areas allow for better communication and interaction between family members or guests. Such as
- Family Connection: Parents can easily supervise children while preparing meals in the kitchen, and couples can spend quality time together even while doing household chores.
- Flexible Spaces: These areas are highly adaptable, making them ideal for multitasking. The kitchen may double as a homework station or workspace, while the living room can seamlessly transition from family relaxation time to an entertainment hub for guests.
- Enhanced Natural Light: Without walls to block it, natural light can flow freely throughout the space, creating a brighter, more inviting atmosphere.
Despite these advantages, open concept spaces can be tricky to organize effectively, and if not managed properly, they can quickly become chaotic. This is where the combination of Feng Shui and Mindful Organizing can truly shine.
Common Challenges in Open Concept Spaces
1. Clutter and Disorganization
One of the biggest challenges of open concept spaces is the potential for clutter. Without walls and doors to physically and emotionally separate different activities, everything from cooking to working to relaxing happens in one shared space. This can lead to a visually chaotic environment where clutter accumulates quickly, making it difficult to maintain a sense of order.
Solution: Mindful Organizing for a Clutter-Free Space
Our Mindful Organize service focuses on helping you declutter and implement efficient storage solutions that are both practical and visually appealing. We understand that open spaces need to feel both functional and cohesive, which is why we work with you to ensure that your storage solutions enhance, rather than detract from, the overall aesthetic of your space. We also provide personalized strategies to help you maintain an organized environment long-term. By developing sustainable organizing systems tailored to your specific needs, we ensure that your open concept space remains easy to manage and clutter-free.
2. Energy Flow Disruptions
Feng Shui principles go beyond aesthetics by addressing how energy moves through your home, i.e how furniture & décor is placed, ensuring that each area feels balanced and harmonious. This makes our approach more comprehensive than traditional design, as it considers both the physical and energetic aspects of your living space.
A common issue clients face is how to orient and scale furniture in a way that supports multiple activities. For example, the kitchen may serve as a place for meal preparation, while the kitchen island doubles as a dining area or workspace. Similarly, a breakfast nook may be used for eating, working, or even as a reading corner. Balancing these multiple functions while maintaining good energy flow is crucial for a well-organized, harmonious space.
Solution: Feng Shui Principles for Optimal Energy Flow
Using Feng Shui principles, we help you arrange your furniture and decor to promote optimal energy flow throughout your open concept space. One common misconception is that Feng Shui principles are incompatible with contemporary interior design, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, many contemporary design principles—such as keeping walkways clear and avoiding overcrowding furniture—align perfectly with Feng Shui’s emphasis on open pathways and balanced energy flow.
We analyze your space and make recommendations for furniture placement that support both functionality and harmony. Whether it’s arranging seating to encourage conversation or positioning decor to enhance socialization, inspire creativity (for work or hobbies), we consider all of these factors to create a balanced and uplifting environment.
3. Difficulty in Personalization
Open concept spaces are often designed to be multifunctional, but this can make it challenging to personalize the space without creating visual clutter or disrupting the overall flow. Many homeowners struggle with making an open space feel uniquely theirs while maintaining a cohesive design aesthetic.
Solution: Personalized Feng Shui & Design Recommendations
At Home & Heart Interiors, we take the time to understand your unique style, preferences, and lifestyle needs. Our personalized approach involves incorporating Feng Shui recommendations that reflect your needs while maintaining an organized and cohesive aesthetic. Whether you prefer a minimalist look or a more eclectic style, remember that Feng Shui is NOT an aesthetic, we ensure that your open concept space feels like home—without compromising on organization or harmony.
By combining mindful organizing strategies with personalized Feng Shui design elements, we help you create a space that not only looks beautiful but also supports your well-being and daily routines.

Decluttering Isn't Organizing: Why Both Matter for a Harmonious Home
At Home & Heart Interiors, we stress the importance of both decluttering and organizing, as a natural pre-cursor to a home that is functional and supports how you live or aspire to live. Our Feng Shui & Mindful Organize service is designed to help you transform your space into a personalized and balanced haven.
When assessing our homes we sometimes confuse decluttering with organizing. While both are essential to creating a harmonious home, they serve different purposes and bring unique benefits. At Home & Heart Interiors, we stress the importance of both decluttering and organizing, as a natural pre-cursor to a home that is functional and supports how you live or aspire to live. Our Feng Shui & Mindful Organize service is designed to help you transform your space into a personalized and balanced haven. In this blog post, we'll explore the differences between decluttering and organizing, and how our service can help you achieve a functional and harmonious home.
In Feng Shui clutter is considered the “invisible noise” of a space. It works to block the flow of energy leading to feelings of stagnation and preventing new opportunities and positive energy from entering the space, and more importantly your life. Think of the adage, “Cluttered space; Cluttered mind”. Such a simple saying but many of us can attest to this when we think of how physical clutter affects our state of mind and vice versa.
1. Physical Clutter: This creates mental clutter, leading to stress, anxiety, and reduced mental clarity.
2. Mental Clutter: This results in difficulty managing physical space, leading to further accumulation of clutter.
3.Emotional Impact: The compounded effect of physical and mental clutter affects emotional well-being, creating a negative feedback loop
Our resistance to decluttering is usually based in four main reasons: emotional attachments, practical concerns, psychological factors and logistical challenges. Typically, professional organizing will emphasize the practical & logistical challenges. Working with Home & Heart Interiors our declutter and organizing coaching sessions help explore the emotional and psychological factors of decluttering. Decluttering may involve confronting difficult emotions or decisions, leading to procrastination as a form of avoidance. Holding onto items provides a sense of control in a life that feels otherwise unpredictable or chaotic. A belief that letting go of items might lead to regret if they are needed in the future. At Home & Heart Interiors, we hold your hand virtually.
Decluttering vs. Organizing: What's the Difference?
Decluttering, the primary goal is to reduce the amount of stuff in your space, making it easier to maintain and more pleasant to live in.
Organizing, on the other hand, is about creating systems and structures for the items you actively, deliberately choose to keep. It's about finding the right place (home) for everything and ensuring that your space is efficient and easy to maintain for your lifestyle.
The Importance of Both
While decluttering is an essential first step, when approached correctly, will help you to make decisions for your space and how you live before you find a home for them. i.e organize them. At the decluttering stage you dig deep to gain clarity about your space and your life.
Decluttering simplifies the organizing process by ensuring that only the items that truly serve you remain in your space. However, without practical and personalized organizing systems, the benefits of decluttering can quickly unravel, leaving you back at square one, waiting for the next "spring declutter" to reset things again. Trying to organize without first decluttering is essentially just shifting items from one space to another and not addressing the root of the problem.
The Benefits of Decluttering & Organizing
Clarity & Intentional Decision-Making
Decluttering and organizing helps my clients gain clarity. The process of decluttering requires reflection to determine what stays and what goes, leading to overall greater clarity and focus on what you want to achieve in this space and how you want it to serve you. Do you want to spend more family time together watching tv, playing games, relaxing & chatting?
Do you want to have daily family dinners at the dining table? We take focused action to achieve what we want. We declutter & organize with the endgame in mind.
Enhance Efficiency
With everything in its proper place, you can find what you need quickly and easily, saving time and effort.
Maintain Order
Effective organizing systems help you maintain a tidy and orderly space over the long term.
Maximize Space
Proper organization can make even small spaces feel more spacious and functional.
Home & Heart Interior’s Comprehensive & Compassionate Approach:
Positive Mindset & Behavioral Changes
Through our virtual coaching we help you explore the reasons that contribute to your un-easiness to let go of items and/or tendencies to hold onto items that are no longer useful to you. The virtual sessions give my clients the permission & support to make decisions in support of the life you will have by decluttering and curating items. Like a sports coach helps you to be at your best athletic performance, we help you to move past the mental blockages so that you can exercise that decluttering & organizing muscle. It may include setting boundaries with yourself to avoid moving past your “clutter threshold” a term coined by Dana K. White. At this point, once you go beyond, you need to declutter to be able to bring your space into emotionally equilibrium to function at your best.
Personalization
We strongly believe that organizing systems need to be tailored to each client. As such, we take the time to understand how clients naturally store and sort items in developing a personalized plan for each client. We are not in the business of trying to change clients’ natural tendencies. For our clients, personalizing our approach & strategies creates a strong foundation in helping form habits that become an integral part of their daily routine.
Why decluttering & organizing as part of our Feng Shui Service
